Fallen Black Hawk County heroes honored at Peace Officer Memorial Service

Posted: Updated:

It was a day to honor and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Black Hawk County law enforcement agencies and family members of fallen heroes gathered in Waterloo for the annual Peace Officer Memorial Service.14 Black Hawk County officers, deputies and troopers have died in the line of duty since 1902, and they were all honored today.

Cindy Reyst was just 21-years-old when her brother, Waterloo Police Officer Michael Hoing and his partner Officer Wayne Rice were killed by T-Bone Taylor in 1981.

Reyst says, "It doesn't get easier any year, but I am just so grateful that people took the time to come out and remember."

That's especially true for Bob Greenlee, who suddenly lost his son, Waterloo Police Sergeant Robert Greenlee III, last month. He was found dead inside his home, not long after working a shift.

Bob Greenlee says, "It's special to us because he meant a lot to a lot of people, us especially."

Brothers and sisters standing together in solidarity, putting their lives on the line every single day...and they wouldn't have it any other way.

Greenlee said, "My son loved it every hour of the day...that was his whole goal in life, to be a police man."

The guest speaker was State Senator William Dotzler who said today's events were not only to honor fallen officers, but also to express gratitude for everyone who puts on a uniform every day.
