A Cedar Falls native was killed Tuesday night in Silay City in the Philippines by two strangers.

According to police reports, 57-year-old Erik Hendrickson politely refused to buy two men beer when asked.  The men reportedly began to insult Hendrickson and, soon after, shot Hendrickson multiple times in the head.  He was taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The two murder suspects, 40-year-old Gilbert Apellido and 18-year-old Neil Brian Corseno, were taken into custody a short time later.

According to family, Hendrickson was in Silay, working to obtain adoption papers for the boy he and his wife, a native of the Philippines, hoped to bring to the U.S.  Hendrickson's parents, sister, nieces and nephews all live in Cedar Falls.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help bring Hendrickson's body home to Iowa, and to aid in the adoption of the young boy.

KWWL sends sincere condolences to Hendrickson's family and friends.
