TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (KWWL) -

The UNI men needed every single point to capture the championship at the Missouri Valley Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Panthers edged Illinois State by a single point to win their first title since 2009.

The Panthers picked up a pair of individual titles on the final day. Jacob Smith led the way in a 1-2 finish with teammate Jojo Frost in the 400 Hurdles. Smith set a facility record finishing in 50.69 seconds. The Panther 4 by 100 team of Connor Ham, Isaiah Trousil, Matt Turcotte and Tayshaun Cooper blazed the track in 39.96 seconds for a title earlier in the day.

The team championship, however, came down to the final race. UNI needed at least a second place finish to guarantee a title. That's what they got as Frost anchored the relay to a runner-up spot just behind team runner-up Illinois State.

Final Men's team scores:

1) Northern Iowa 170 2) Illinois State 169 3) Indiana State 143 4) Southern Illinois 125 5) Drake 74 6) Bradley 57 7) Loyola (Ill.) 53 8) Valparaiso 22 9) Evansville 4
