Luther softball shuts out Cornell to advance to regional final

DECORAH (KWWL) -

Samantha Bratland tossed a one-hit shut-out as the 16th ranked Luther softball team topped Cornell 6-0 to advance to the Division III regional softball final.

Bratland struck out ten in improving to 23-4 on the season.

Offensively Ashley Burrows got the Norse rolling in the second inning by blasting an opposite field solo home run over the left field wall to put Luther on top 1-0 in the fourth inning. Abby Pender put the game away later in the sixth with a 3-run line drive blast.

The win marked the fifth straight for Luther in the post-season. The run came after the Norse struggled late in the regular season, falling in six of their final eight games.

"I think everyone's just kind of decided that hey we're just going to go out there and have fun," said Bratland, "I think that's what we've been trying to do all year, and finally everyone was just like 'let's take a deep breath and just go for it.'"

Luther will face top-seeded Saint Benedict on Sunday at noon for the regional championship.
