CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Dubuque rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take down Wartburg and capture the program's first ever Iowa Conference title. The victory came about a week after the Spartans won their first ever regular season title in the conference.

The Spartans exploded for 11-runs in their last three trips to the plate. After trailing 4-0 going to the bottom of the sixth, Dubuque rallied with three runs in the inning, two more to take the lead in the seventh, and six more in a huge eighth inning to put the game away.

Senior Dalton Garst led the offensive outburst by going 3-for-3 at the plate, which included the RBI that put the Spartans ahead for good creating a special moment with the team's first title.

"It's really exhilarating right now. Coming back and getting those 6 runs in the 8th inning, that was huge," Garst said, "It got us a lot of energy. You couldn't script it any better."

The Spartans came in to the year sporting some extra motivation after tragedy hit the team. Assistant coach Luke Kalb lost his battle with a rare form of liver cancer during the preseason. Head Coach Paul Wyczawski spoke of it after the title clinching win.

"I'm just so happy for these guys. They battled all year long and really competed and it's a close group of guys.," Wyczawski says. "I know we battled a little bit of adversity losing my assistant coach Luke Kalb back in February and it's just a neat way to honor him with great effort every day at the ballpark."

Dubuque will learn their destination for their first ever NCAA tournament game on Sunday night.
