WATERLOO (KWWL) -

People in an eastern Iowa neighborhood are noticing a new problem.

They say they're seeing and hearing squirrels with collars and bells in their neighborhood.

According to Animal Control workers, a live trap was set up in the 1500 block of Byron to try and capture the squirrels and remove the collars.

They want to remind people, it's illegal to raise wild animals, and there could even be a fine.

According to person who lives in Byron neighborhood, they've noticed at least two squirrels with different collars, and they also have bells attached to the collars.

Black Hawk Wildlife Rehabilitation Project workers say they're doing everything they can to capture the squirrels to get the collars removed.

They're concerned the squirrels could suffocate as they grow, the collars could get caught on something, or the collars could become embedded in their skin.
