Man recalls saving baby from Cedar Rapids apartment fire

Posted: Updated:

Travis Steichen says he woke up to the sound of screaming and looked out his window to see an apartment building down the street was on fire.

It happened early this morning along Harbet Avenue NW.

In the few minutes before fire crews arrived on scene Steichen ran over to try and help.

"I came to the entry thinking I was going to knock on doors, that wasn't going to happen," he told us.

He says he heard the screams again.

"I heard her say my babies are dying and it was just chilling," Steichen told us.

Without a thought he says he was on the escape ladder climbing towards the woman he could  hear on the third floor.

"I screamed at her, I said there's a ladder come out the window there's a ladder. And she said where, where? She had no idea. We couldn't see," he says.

Then through the smoke, he saw the woman stick out her arms.

"There was two arms that came out holding a little baby she goes it's my infant, it's my infant. I just grabbed the baby real quick and climbed down the ladder."

Crews arrived shortly after to find others hanging from windows.

Eight people including the baby were taken to the hospital, but everyone is expected to be okay.

No suspects have been identified at this time.
