UPDATE: Cedar Rapids apartment fire intentionally set

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

UPDATE: An investigation by the Cedar Rapids Fire Department determined that the fire at 126 Harbet Avenue NW Thursday morning was intentionally set. The fire originated in the hallway of the 3rd-story, 6-unit apartment complex.

Out of the 12 people who were in the apartment complex at the time of the fire, eight were taken to the hospital. 

There is significant fire, heat and smoke damage to the entire complex.

Cedar Rapids firefighters tell us eight people are in the hospital, including an infant, after an apartment fire.

Firefighters have said the injuries of those taken to the hospital are believed to be non-life threatening. A fire chief on scene says one of the injuries may be  a leg fracture. 

Firefighters are also saying there is heavy damage to the apartment, but they do not know at this time if it is a complete loss.

Red Cross is now on scene assisting the families who are displaced at his time. 

Neighbors tell KWWL they saw a man run up a ladder to save an infant that was on the third floor of the building. 

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says when firefighters arrived, they found people hanging from windows of the three-story structure, where flames and smoke could be seen.

The department says ladders were quickly employed to help the residents to safety. The fire was extinguished by 4:50 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters say the apartment caught fire shortly before 3:45 a.m. at 126 Harbet Avenue. 5 to 6 units were impacted by the fire.

There's fire damage on the second and third levels of the apartment.

Right now, firefighters are investigating what caused it.
