Damage to Angels Park in Evansdale

Posted: Updated:
EVANSDALE (KWWL) -

People in Evansdale discovered significant damage Wednesday to an area of Angels Park on Meyers Lake.

The park is a memorial to many victims including Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins, who were kidnapped and murdered in 2012.

The damage happened near the statue of children playing at the entrance of the park. Cement was broken up in three places, and appears to have been thrown in multiple directions. The dirt and plants around the statue were also thrown across the area. However, the statue and the dozens of memorial bricks at the entrance don't appear to be damaged.

Construction is currently underway to put in a more handicap-accessible bridge to the park, but that is not what caused the damage.

Elizabeth's father, Drew Collins says he believes the damage was caused by lightning during early morning storms on Wednesday. Collins says neighbors in the area say they heard a large crash, but did not know, at the time, where it came from.

It is not clear what the cost of the repairs will be. The park remains open.
