FAYETTE COUNTY (KWWL) -

There is a confirmed case of whooping cough within an eastern Iowa elementary school.

North Fayette Valley Community Schools Superintendent Duane Willhite tells KWWL via email, there has been a case of Pertussis (commonly known as whooping cough) confirmed at Valley Elementary in Elgin. In the message, Willhite says Fayette County Public Health officials are aware of the case, and are providing guidance at this time.

Meanwhile, health officials in Cerro Gordo County say there are seven confirmed cases of the highly contagious disease in the Mason City Community School District, and among staff at a nearby McDonald's restaurant.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, whooping cough is spread when people who are infected cough or sneeze. Symptoms typically start out similar to a common cold, but can turn into violent coughing spells.
