'Old chamber building' moved to make way for new Cedar Falls hotel

Posted: Updated:

A piece of Cedar Falls history was moved this morning.

The building that's known to many people as the 'old chamber building' was picked up, moved, and relocated.

For about 40 years, the building sat along First Street in Cedar Falls.

But this morning, crews slowly moved the building to its new location at 310 East 4th street, across from Viking Pump.

Carol Lilly, the executive director of Community Main Street, says it was exciting for people to see.

"There was a look of wonder, surprise, and just wow. There was a lot of look at what's going on. That's a big question. What's happening," she said.

Lilly says the building was moved to make way for a new Hampton Inn coming to 1st Street.

She says, "We're really excited. It's going to have 127 rooms. The hotel's going to be starting up as early as this week, and they're ready to go. And we're happy to have them. We're happy to get out of the way because the hotel will be a great addition for downtown."

Meanwhile, the 'old chamber building' will be used by Community Main Street for meetings and for storage space.

Western Home Communities owned the building. They donated it to Community Main Street, which is a nonprofit that's dedicated to planning events and taking care of downtown Cedar Falls.

If Western Home Communities did not donate the building, there is a good chance it would have been demolished.

Today was all about preserving a part of Cedar Falls history.
