WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Waterloo Schools will receive $1.5 million from the R.J. McElroy Trust to "fund a community-engaged learning initiative designed to benefit all students in the district" beginning this fall.

The initiative is being created with the vision of bringing learning outside of the classroom and into communities in Waterloo, according to the district.

The $1.5 million grant for Waterloo Schools is the largest in the history of the trust, which was founded by longtime Iowa broadcaster R.J. McElroy in 1965 for the benefit of deserving young people. The trust has distributed approximately $65 million since being created.

“Mac loved Waterloo, and he had great respect for education. He wanted to help students have opportunities he never had. Mac thought big, and the scale of this program matches his vision,” said Jim Waterbury, Chair of the R.J. McElroy Trust Board of Trustees.
