Community does "Jake Workout" in hopes to #BringJakeHome

LA PORTE CITY (KWWL) -

It's been nearly a month since 16-year-old Jake Wilson from La Porte City was reported missing. The teen with autism told his parents he was walking to nearby Wolf Creek, but he never came home.

Since Jake went missing, the community has rallied together to do everything they can to #BringJakeHome. After Jake went missing, Union High School physical education teacher Scott Denner knew he had to do something to help his students adjust.

He remembered, he had a folder with every work out students completed in his class. He found Jake's folder and for a few days after Jake went missing, students and fitness classes did the "Jake Workout."

"It's exactly what he did on his last workout, its what the workout is," said Denner.

The Union High School weight room is missing Jake Wilson's contagious smile.

"He is always smiling, literally always smiling," said Denner. "Always asking questions, not afraid to talk to anybody, just an uplifting young man."

Denner says Jake loves the weight room.

"He'd always say hey Mr. Denner look how strong I am," said Denner. "Jake loved to curl, that's one thing you should know about Jake, very strong upper body."

Denner has students write down their workouts and he keeps them in a folder.

"I guess the idea was try to connect a little hope with exercise having it as a way for kids and people around to know Jake in a different way, the way I knew him, and to bring some hope to the community," said Denner.

This workout is a way for some to feel closer to Jake, through something he loved.

"We just don't want people to forget that he is still out there and he still can be found," said Denner.

Denner says he keeps Jake's workout on the white board in his weight room, he says some students take it upon themselves to do the workout, to help them feel closer to Jake and keep hope to bring him home.

This upcoming Monday there will be a vigil for Jake in La Porte City. For more information on the vigil CLICK HERE.
