President Trump nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

WASHINGTON (KWWL) -

President Trump has been formally nominated for a 2019 Nobel Peace Prize after 18 congressmen sent a letter to the committee for consideration.

Nelson Mandela, The Dalai Lama, and Mother Teresa, are the names of some of the past winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. Now, President Trump could be among them.

Iowa Congressman Steve King was among the 18 other congressmen who signed the letter nominating President Trump. The letter gives several reasons why the president deserves the award. One of those being his "tireless work to apply maximum pressure on North Korea to end its illicit weapons program and bring peace to the region."

Just last week, South Korea's President Moon Jae-in and North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un had their historic meeting where they declared an end to the Korean War. President Moon Jae-in's national security adviser even gave President Trump credit for his work to bring peace.

The adviser, Chung Eui-Yong says, "I explained to President Trump that his leadership and his maximum pressure policy, together with international solidarity, brought us to this juncture. I expressed this to President Moon Jae-in his personal gratitude for Trumps leadership."

The congressmen aren't the only ones who thought President Trump deserves the award. This past weekend at a rally in Michigan, some of his supporters chanted "Nobel". The president was telling those at the rally that he was just trying to get his job done, adding that his strength is what will keep the United States out of nuclear war.

There are currently 330 nominees for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. The Prize Committee has not announce the nominees. The winner will be named in October, however, President Trump's nomination is for the following year.
