Tennis coach now cancer free to reunite with opposing team who surprised her last year

Posted: Updated:

A surprise of a lifetime came before a Linn-Mar vs. Dubuque Wahlert tennis match last year.

Linn-Mar put on t-shirts in their opponents school colors with the words "Team Westy" in support of Wahlert coach Julie Westercamp who was battling a very serious pancreatic cancer.

On year later the teams are set to meet again but this time Coach Westercamp is cancer free.

"It's amazing how that support really helps you have a positive attitude and really, really, really forces you to really want to get through this thing you know," she told us.

"I think she helped us more than we helped her and that's a compliment to her and her strength and her courage," says Chris Wundram, the Linn-Mar Tennis Coach.

Players were impacted as well.

"The look coach had on her face, she was like so surprised and so happy she almost started crying and that's probably one of the moments I will never, probably not ever forget in my life," Ben Hediger, a Linn-Mar senior told us.

Linn-Mar had also brought "Team Westy" shirts for the Wahlert team to wear, making two teams look like one.

"It doesn't really matter you know who you are, you can still connect on the level that you're both trying to get better and you're all people working towards the same goal," says  Michael McGrew, a Linn-Mar junior.

"They bonded with us you know and it makes it like a family, you know I mean a tennis family," says Coach Westercamp.

The meet this week was supposed to happen today but has been moved to Friday because of incoming weather.

Still, it's sure to feel like a family reunion.

"Honestly, I'll probably give her a hug right when I see her," says Hediger.

The teams are planning on getting pizza together after the match.
