The movie, Avengers: Infinity Wars is smashing the box office with the biggest opening weekend ever and its director has Iowa ties.

On Monday, one of the directors of the film, Joe Russo, was in Iowa City to speak about the movie and his experiences.

Russo directed the film with his brother and is a University of Iowa alum. He said his experience at the UI helped shaped his career which now includes directing one, if not two, of the biggest and deepest movies of all time.

"We did both Avengers 3 and 4 with two of the most expensive movies ever made, in one years time. Took two weeks off between the two and had to figure out how to coordinate the schedules of a lot of movie stars. I think we basically shut down Hollywood for the year that we were making the film," Russo said.

Russo has also directed a number of other Marvel movies plus the hit television shows, Arrested Development and Community. The fourth Avengers film will come out in 2019.

The event took place at the Englert Theatre by the UI's Lecture Committee.
