Best of the Class becomes family tradition

LONE TREE (KWWL) -

Some of the greatest young minds in Iowa will be under one roof Saturday during the annual Best of the Class ceremony.

Even though every gathering is special, this year's Best of the Class is a bit bigger for one eastern Iowa family.

Every year, KWWL recognizes the top high school graduating seniors throughout the area during the Best of the Class ceremony at UNI.

This year will be a bit more special for 17-year-old Sydney Alt and her family.

That's because Sydney will be the fourth person in her family to graduate from Lone Tree High School, Best of the Class.

In 2016, her sister Devyn graduated Best of the Class.

In 1991, it was her mother Sheila, and back in 1988 her father William also graduated Best of the Class.

Sydney says the best part is that every family member is following their own dreams.

"It's pretty cool to be able to start in the same place, but know that we're different people, and our paths are taking us in different places. So, I hope I can make my family proud doing what I choose to do, which is enjoyable to me, as well," Sydney Alt said.

Sydney says she plans to go to college to become a teacher.

Sydney says there are nearly 30 students in her graduating class, and the top seniors in the area will be honored Saturday at UNI.
