Cities respond to Iowa Supreme Court ruling on speed camera

Muscatine responds to the Iowa Supreme Court ruling on speed cameras.

The City of Muscatine certainly appreciates the decision made today by the Iowa Supreme Court.

This ruling supports Home Rule by local municipalities.

The unanimous judgment that the Iowa Department of Transportation did not have the authority to regulate Automatic Traffic Enforcement (ATE) supports the decision-making role of local jurisdictions who must, and should, have the authority to decide issues of local public safety.

Local government is best able to address the concerns of and the safety of its citizens.  As of today, no decision as to when the traffic cameras will be turned back on has been made.
