BREMER COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Bremer County Sheriff's Office posted to Facebook, saying they would like to remind people how to best handle a controlled burn.

They say it's important for people to check the weather forecast before starting.

DO NOT burn on windy days.

The Facebook post also says, "If the weather is favorable please call the Sheriff's Office at 319-352-5400 option #3 and inform our dispatchers that you are going to be conducting a controlled burn." (Or call the Sheriff's Office in the county you are in)

It's important that law enforcement knows your location, when you are going to start and finish, and who will be monitoring the fire.

The Bremer County Sheriff's Office says it helps if they know what's going on, so they don't have to send deputies or the fire department out to investigate.

The last thing they say is, "Don't leave the controlled burn until it is completely extinguished. Remember, if your fire gets out of hand and creates damage, you could be held responsible. We appreciate your assistance!"
