First ax-throwing bar comes to Iowa

Posted: Updated:

Ax-throwing bars first gained popularity in Canada, and only recently started opening in larger cities like Chicago and Kansas City. One eastern Iowa city will be the first ax-throwing bar located in the state.

Taking over the recently-closed Family Video Store in Iowa City, Hatchet Jacks hopes to become the first ax-throwing bar in the state.

"It's a place where you can throw hatchets and I know that sounds kind of out there to people. Think of it as a bowling alley but a little bit different of an activity," co-owner, Nick Carroll, said.

Carroll said he and his partner got the idea after visiting a similar place in New Jersey and that it can be much more than simply throwing an ax at a target.

"You can play horse in here. There's all type of games you can play. There's league scoring so we're going to do some leagues," he said.

The business is currently under construction. Once completed, it'll have twelve lanes inside some of which will be for singles or doubles and others for large groups to throw.

It'll also serve beer and wine but with a limit of three drinks per person. Carroll said that would be monitored with wristbands that can be marked.

"We want people to be responsible but it's nice to be to enjoy a glass of beer of wine while you're doing it," he said.

Also, on hand, will be "ax-perts" who will teach people how to throw, what the rules are, and to monitor activity to ensure safety.

Carroll said they hope to have Hatchet Jacks open in June.

"I think you'll see these places all over sooner rather than later and we're the first in Iowa," he said.
