Students briefly evacuated during Ossian fire

Posted: Updated:

A fire inside a former fertilizer plant in Ossian briefly forced an evacuation of a school and childcare center on Friday.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office says the DeSales School and Childcare Center was evacuated as emergency crews from seven different agencies quickly contained the fire inside the plant, which still had some fertilizer inside of it, across East Main Street in Ossian. An initial call about the fire came into the Sheriff's Office around 12:15 p.m. today.

Authorities say students were relocated to South Winn Elementary School across town during the evacuation as a precaution, but were able to return to DeSales within an hour. No injuries were reported during the situation.

Fire crews from Ossian, Calmar, Castalia and Decorah worked alongside sheriff's officers at the scene, while Winneshiek County Emergency Management and Calmar Police also responded.
