The 2018 Fareway Shamrocks fundraising program raised $163,553 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Iowa.  It's the highest amount raised through the Shamrock program during the history of the Fareway Stores and MDA partnership.

From February 15 through March 17, Fareway Stores asked their customers while they were checking out to support the MDA by purchasing a MDA Shamrock pinup for $1, $5 or a larger contribution. Each Shamrock was signed by the customers and displayed in each store.

“Once again, Fareway retailers, their customers, and employees have gone above and beyond to make a meaningful difference for people whose everyday freedoms - walking, talking and even breathing - have been taken away by neuromuscular diseases,” said MDA of Iowa Director of Business Development, Brette Dowson. “It is because of their generosity that MDA is able to provide lifesaving research and support to help these individuals and their families live longer, grow stronger and experience a world without limits.”

This is the 36th year for the MDA Shamrocks program.  In Iowa, the money raised will fund groundbreaking research and provide individuals with life-enhancing programs and services, including care the MDA Care Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.  Funds raised also make MDA Summer Camp possible for more than 70 area kids.  The camp is held each summer at Camp Courageous in Monticello.

The MDA holds many events throughout the year to raise money for the work they do for families in Iowa.  KWWL's Abby Turpin recently emceed the 2018 MDA Muscle Walk in Waterloo on April 7.

This year's Waterloo Walk was dedicated to Ty Pavelec and Tadd Nichols.  Both recently died after long, courageous battles.  The MDA of Iowa was able to provide both men and their families with the assistance they needed for many years.

The event, held on the campus of Hawkeye Community College, raised over $33,000, with an original goal of $24,000.
