Will spring ever arrive?

Posted: Updated:

Snow and ice plagued Eastern Iowa yet again Wednesday.

The April 18th snow canceled school and covered up any signs of spring.

In the snow removal business, it's was another long 24 hours laying salt, plowing, and re-plowing.

"You take what you get and roll with the punches," said Craig Voelker, Voelker Property Management.

But there is at least one possible sign of spring.

"If snow sticks to the north side of the tree, that supposedly means it will be the last snowstorm of the year. I am seeing it over there on those trees, and I am hoping it is the last storm of the year," said Voelker.

Voelker isn't alone, stores like O'Donnell's Ace Hardware have already geared up for spring.

The stacks of topsoil outside the store were topped with snow and inside shiny new grills begged to be fired up.

But customers could also still find salt on the shelves.

"Didn't sell a lot in November and December. It is kind of like the season all got moved forward a little bit," said O'Donnell's Ace Hardware manager, Roger Koth.

On the bright side, the snow was one of the best snows all winter for snowball fights, snowmen, and sledding.

"It is great. Like awesome," said Nicholas Roberts, who took full advantage of one more snow day.

If you listened close on Wednesday afternoon, you could hear the sound of water draining off the streets, as the snow melted and spring tired to push through.
