Winter in April affecting truck drivers

Posted: Updated:

Truck drivers who were taking a break at an Evansdale rest stop say the roads this morning were very bad. Many saying the further north they traveled the worse the road conditions became.

A driver who had made a loop from Waterloo to Dubuque and back on interstate 20 said, "About 25, 30 miles east it's alright but past that it gets slick pretty good".

A truck driver who we spoke with today said when the conditions get icy and windy, trucks with empty or lighter trailers have a tougher time driving through the conditions. He tells us the more weight their carrying the easier it is for the to navigate snowy roads.

One telling us this 'winter' in April has made for a long, hectic driving season.

Iowa DOT supervisor Barry Thede wants to remind drivers that conditions can change in a matter of minutes.

Thede saying, "We were out driving the roads and within about 10 minutes they went from completely wet to 100 percent ice, and obviously our bridges were really bad at that point but it can definitely change within a matter of minutes that's for sure."

Thede also adding if the center line looks dull and is not reflecting, there is likely some ice on the road.
