Late winter storm causes icy conditions in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Many in eastern Iowa are feeling the winter blues April because of the late winter storm.

"I ain't dealing with it too well cause I don't  like the cold," said Diamond Montgomery of Dubuque.

The storm dropped ice pellets all over the city. Sleet covered the roads and sidewalks making travel conditions slick. It led to the Dubuque Community School District sending students home two hours early. Western Dubuque Schools dismissed three hours early.

The icy roads caused some accidents. At last check, Dubuque Police said there were about six in the city. Further out in the county, there were a few more with some cars sliding in ditches.

Everyone has been adjusting to the weather, including Dubuque's public works department which was already on their summer schedule.

"We started notifying our people, made them aware, we're gonna be changing shifts, we're gonna go back to winter operations, split our people up so we have operators available for 24 hours," said John Klostermann, public works director.

Although this is Iowa, and the weather can be unpredictable, people said they've had enough.

"Overall the guys are ready to do construction and put winter behind us," Klostermann added.
