UPDATE: Strong winds now pushing back traffic changes on Viking Road

Posted: Updated:

Crews were expecting a switch to head-to-head traffic on Viking Road today.

The Iowa DOT now says, they are deciding to delay the traffic changes because of high winds. They say the contractor has to do some traffic signal work to make the switch, and he didn’t feel comfortable doing the work with the strong winds.

Stay with KWWL for updates.

Starting today, there will be head-to-head traffic on Viking Road in the westbound lanes.

This is expected to last until mid-summer.

Eventually, the head-to-head traffic will shift onto the eastbound lanes. With the change in traffic patterns, the Iowa DOT says the speed limit on Viking Road will be reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph.

Iowa 58 traffic was originally scheduled to be switched to a head-to-head traffic pattern at the same time as Viking Road. Now, that traffic switch on Iowa 58 will be made at a later date

Both Cedar Falls and the Iowa Department of Transportation are hosting a public information meeting.

The meeting will focus on the Highway 58/Viking Road project.

According to the City of Cedar Falls website, tonight they're going to provide an overview of the project, layout the proposed schedule, and talk about traffic and access.

The Iowa DOT says this intersection is known for being one of the most dangerous in the state.

They are building an underpass at the intersection, which will allow Highway 58 to pass underneath Viking Road.

This project is expected to last around two years.

UPDATE: The Iowa DOT was going to start a two-year Highway 58 and Viking Road interchange project today, weather permitting.

This morning, they announced that the start date for the project is going to be delayed two days. Construction on this project is now expected to begin on Wednesday of this week. That is March 28, 2018.

Work will begin tomorrow on the two-year Highway 58 and Viking Road interchange project in Cedar Falls, weather permitting.

The intersection is marked as one of the most dangerous intersections by the Iowa Department of Transportation, but this new project could possibly help with that problem.

The Iowa DOT is set to start building an underpass at the intersection, which will allow Highway 58 to go underneath Viking Road. This project will cost $32.1 million.

The DOT says the initial work will cause lane closures on both Iowa 58 and Viking Road to place temporary pavement and traffic signals in the area.

The lane closures will result in some congestion that will cause traffic backups and delays during peak times. The DOT encourages drivers to look for alternative routes to avoid the congestion.
