RoughRiders will stay in Cedar Rapids despite rumors of possible move

Posted: Updated:

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders will spend at least 15 more years at The Stable.

This week the team came to a lease agreement with the city, their current lease will expire next spring.

A new ice arena in the works in Coralville lead to rumors the team would move there.

We are told a move was never the team's intention.

"We're the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and we're always going to be the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. We love it here. We've been embraced with open arms for 20 years, we're ensconced here and this is our, this is our city," says Co-President Doug Miller.

As part of the new lease the city will be adding another concession stand, installing party decks and replacing stadium seats.

The RoughRiders will do their part upgrading the locker and weight rooms and improving team offices among other projects.

"It's a great arena one of the best in the league, one of the best in North America actually. But it's 20 years old and it does need improvements," Miller says.

If the team invests $1 Million in the improvements of the arena over the next 15 years, an additional 20 years will be added to their lease.

Miller says the team will spend at least $1 Million on the improvements that need to be made, so they are confident in an additional 20 years down the road.
