CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A 27-year-old Waterloo man will spend 10 years in prison for illegally having a gun, which he used to shoot a 17-year-old.

Eric Sallis was sentenced today to a maximum sentence, which will also include a three-year term of supervised release after the 10 years of prison time.

A federal court release says Sallis admitted to illegally having the handgun in his Waterloo apartment in late 2016. Evidence in court showed Sallis had shot the 17-year-old victim three times, which he also later admitted to during a sentencing hearing. The victim was treated at a Waterloo hospital.

Sallis pleaded guilty in federal court last July.
