Iowa mom shares skin cancer selfie to warn others about tanning beds

Posted: Updated:

An eastern Iowa mom posts a selfie to Facebook to warn others about the dangers of tanning beds.

Clear Lake mom Mallory Lubbock is 26, and she got skin cancer.

She says she never thought it would happen to her until it did.

The Clear Lake mom posted some selfies to her Facebook Page, one with a bandage on her face, and the other showing the stitches underneath.

Lubbock goes on to say when she was 16, she went to tanning beds every single day.

She hopes her pictures can be a reminder to parents to not let their kids use tanning beds.

With prom season going on, we checked in with Dermatology Associates in Waterloo. They say they're not surprised by seeing Lubbock's post.

"We really ask you to stay out of the tanning beds. To get a tan just for the prom season is not worth the cancer or melanoma. We ask that you do the spray on tans if you'd like. There's  even creams you can use for artificial tanning," Family Nurse Practitioner Rhian Gronewold says.

Lubbock adds that she will have to drive back to Cedar Rapids to get her stitches removed and to get her wound checked. She will also have other appointments to check for any other cancerous spots

The woman advised other parents to take her warning seriously and to keep their children out of tanning beds.
