MAQUOKETA (KWWL) -

UPDATE:

One of Iowa's most popular state parks will be closed for the spring and much of the summer.

The Maquoketa Caves State Park, located in Jackson County, attracts about 300,000 visitors to Jackson County each year.

"We feel that it will have an impact, but one of the great things that Maquoketa has going for it is that we are currently continuing to grow and invest in other great attractions and amenities that we have available," said Matt Notz, executive director of the Maquoketa Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is closing the park because of road construction and electrical upgrades to the campground.

With the temporary closure, it'll be awhile before anyone can wander through the caves.

While some might be disappointed, Notz said the upgrades will be a good thing. "We're excited that they're not just fixing the roadway, but they're gonna be making some vast improvements that are just gonna make that a stronger asset, and stronger attraction."

In the meantime, there's still plenty to do in the Maquoketa area. "Right down Main Street, we have great new businesses that are growing and thriving, and other great attractions, from the 270 acre Prairie Creek Recreation Area," added Notz.
