Hawkeye to close Transition Center

Posted: Updated:

A center at Hawkeye Community College to help people get back on their feet following a layoff will be phased out.

The Dislocated Worker Transition Center on Hawkeye's campus will close later this month, because grants to pay for the program on campus are expiring.

It's important to note, the Iowa WorkForce Development still has resources in place around the state, including Waterloo to help people in need.

The center on Hawkeye's campus opened through grant money, shortly after more than 1,000 John Deere employees were laid off nearly three years ago.

Several people have benefited from the transition program at Hawkeye by learning new skills or just finishing school through the nearly $1.7 million program.

People using the center have until the end of the month, and they've already been in contact with their case workers to find the best resources near them.

The center at Hawkeye has been open for more than two years now.
