President Grassley? Iowa Senator could be 3rd in line for presidency

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley could be one step closer to becoming the next President of the United States.

If President Trump steps down, Vice President Mike Pence would be next in line, followed by House Speaker Paul Ryan. The President pro tempore of the Senate is 3rd in succession.

That position is currently held by Utah Senator Orrin Hatch. Last year, Hatch announced he would retire at the end of his seventh term. Hatch has served for 42 years.

When Hatch retires, that position is filled "by custom, the senator of the majority party with the longest record of continuous service."

If Republicans can hold the Senate majority after the 2018 elections, Senator Thad Cochran, of Mississippi, would be next, as he's served for nearly 40 years.

However, Cochran recently announced that he's leaving his seat effective April 1st, citing health issues. Senator Grassley would be next, serving for 38 years.

If the Democrats take back the Senate majority, Vermont Senator Pat Leahy would fill the position.
