Winter weather hits Tri-state area

Posted: Updated:

After a few days of springlike temperatures, mother nature is dumping more winter weather on eastern Iowa.

Monday, a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow fell on Dubuque.

Crews from the city's public works department planning to work around the clock. "Staff will be in, they'll be in until midnight, then we'll have another crew come in at midnight, so we'll continue that 24-hour operation as needed," said director, John Klostermann.

The roads and sidewalks were slick as the city got pelted with ice. Windshields of cars were ice coated, even street signs covered with icicles.

The weather caused schools to cancel classes for the day.

Despite visible lingering signs of winter, this year has been slightly below average for the public works department. "We usually have between 22...20 and 22, 24, maybe events average per year, so that way we're a little behind on snowfall," Klostermann said.

Budget expenses are under too.

"At this time, we have about $600,000 out of our $1.5 million dollar budget that we have for snow and ice control," he said.
