HAPPENING TODAY: Highway 63 project begins; plan ahead for detour

Posted: Updated:

Drivers in Waterloo may need to find a new route as a major re-construction project kicks off.

Starting today, Highway 63 will be closed from Franklin to Newell.

The Iowa DOT is building a highway over the railroad.

It will solve the problem of water collecting on the road, under the train bridge.

The DOT says people should expect delays, and they ask that people  be patient.

"People who are traveling on 63 through Waterloo, they'll be detoured. On the north end, they will take Airline highway to the West, the Airport Boulevard a little bit south, get on 218, go south, and then hook back up with 63. So that will be the detour for thru traffic," says Pete Hjelmstad with Iowa DOT.

The bridge project is expected to be done in November of next year
