ALABAMA (NBC NEWS) -

Today in Alabama, thousands of people came together to re-enact a key moment in civil rights.

The group marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which extends from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, chanting, "Thank you, John Lewis".

The march, was being used as a way to remember the day known as "Bloody Sunday".

In 1965, civil rights activists tried crossing the bridge in a stand for voting rights, when they were brutally attacked by police.

John Lewis himself, addressed the crowd, saying there is still work to be done.
