CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A house fire breaks out early Sunday morning, displacing an eastern Iowa couple.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says the fire started just after midnight Sunday morning at 101 Evelyn Dr. SW.

Crews saw heavy smoke coming from the backside of the home when they arrived on scene. The used hoselines to knock out the fire along with ventilation and foam. Crews say the fire from the basement imposed a lot of heat to the subfloor and substantial amounts of smoke affected all parts of the home.

Bob and Deb Stepanek were inside, but were able to make it out safely, however they have been displaced and the American Red Cross is assisting them at this time.

The fire is under investigation.
