They asked for volunteers to read to local school children and, once again, volunteers responded.  Over 130 volunteers, including KWWL's Abby Turpin, took time out of their Friday to read to 92 classrooms for about 30 minutes to impress upon students the importance of reading.

The national initiative, Read Across America, takes place every year on or around March 2, the birthday of children's author, Dr. Seuss.  This year marks the 20th year nationally, but the second for the Cedar Valley.  Sponsored by the National Education Association, the Cedar Valley effort is organized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa, the Cedar Valley Jaycees and the Cedar Falls Kiwanis Rough Risers to bring the volunteers into the classrooms of the Waterloo and Cedar Falls Community School Districts.

The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa was the local sponsor for the initiative, and their financial support allowed the program to be expanded into Cedar Falls this year.

“The Read Across America event was a great success. The Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa is excited to have been part of bringing Cedar Valley volunteers, schools, and students together to celebrate the importance of reading,” said Kaye Englin, CFNEIA President and CEO.

Additionally, with the CFNEIA's support, over 300 books were donated to participating classrooms so students can continue to enjoy reading on a daily basis.

Next year’s Cedar Valley Read Across America event will be on Friday, March 1, 2019. For more information on how you can get involved, contact Katie Orlando, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa, by email at katie.orlando@iowabigs.org.
