Camp Albrecht Acres set to celebrate 40 years tonight

Posted: Updated:

Camp Albrecht Acres in Dubuque County looks a lot different today than it did 40 years ago.

Then, it was just tents and only dozens of campers.

Now, they have a sprawling 40-acre facility that features a pond and a pool, and they cater to 700 campers every summer.

The camp caters to people with a broad range of physical and mental disabilities.

"They come here and the world adapts to them. We do whatever we can to make sure they can participate in all of our activities in one form or another. And also for them, they make life long friendships here," said Eric Veltstra, the camp's executive director.

Now they're set to celebrate all that history, with an event tonight called "A Night of Celebrating All Abilities".

It's not only a celebration, but a fundraiser for the camp.  Events like these are so important, Veltstra said, because they get about half of their budget every year through donations.

"The one thing that has stayed the same over these years, is of course, community support from volunteers and our donors. We literally cannot do it without them. They are what makes this place a success."

The event is from 6-10 p.m. at Steeple Square. Tickets are $100. or a table of eight can be bought for $800.
