Springville won again at the state tournament.

Springville began its quest for a third consecutive state championship with a workmanlike 56-34 victory over Algona Bishop Garrigan to start the Class 1A portion of the tournament.

The top-ranked Orioles have reached the title game in each of the past three years and their four senior starters all have been a part of those teams.

Mikayla Nachazel led the way against Garrigan with 19 points and nine rebounds. An excellent passer out of the high post, Nachazel also handed out four assists.

Alyssa Jaeger and Madi Wagaman each scored 10 points and the fourth senior starter, Rylee Menster, added six. Nichole Kane, a junior, scored seven points.

Springville improved to 6-0 in first-round games at state and is now 96-10 over the last four years. The Orioles take a 22-3 season record into a semifinal game at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Bishop Garrigan, ranked 15th, made the tournament for the first time since 2000 and finishes 18-7. Jenna Boelter led the Golden Bears with 10 points and Grace McGuire scored nine.

Garrigan missed its first nine shots and never was able to mount any kind of serious threat. After a slow start, Springville put together a 16-2 run in the second quarter to open a 27-7 lead and stayed well out in front the rest of the way.

Springville shot 49 percent and enjoyed a 38-24 rebounding advantage.
