Grundy Center survives Regina in a thriller 46-45 in state opener

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Three shots and three Regina Regal misses, all in the final 8.5 seconds, propelled Grundy Center to the 2A state semifinals as the Spartans survived the late barrage to pick up a 46-45 win.

The ending was fitting for a game that went back and forth for the previous 32 minutes. Grundy Center held the game's largest lead at just six points with under five minutes to go. The Regals chipped away to pull within one with 1:25 left, while neither team scored the remainder of the game.

Kylie Willis and Brooke Flater led a balanced Spartan attack with 12 and 11 points respectively. Mary Crompton paced the Regals with 20.

Grundy Center advances to face Treynor in the 2A semifinals on Friday.
