Cedar Rapids gets improved fire protection system rating

Posted: Updated:

The City of Cedar Rapids has received an improved ISO (Insurance Services Office) rating.

ISO evaluates property/casualty insurance risk at more than 46,000 Fire Departments nationwide.

A one rating is the best in terms of fire protection and a ten rating is the worst.

Cedar Rapids is now in the top 3% in the country with it's fire suppression delivery system.

The city has gone from a three rating to an improved two.

"The City's investment in infrastructure, equipment and personnel has resulted in a fire suppression system that allows the Fire Department to efficiently respond and reduce property loss. The Improved ISO rating validates the Utility Department's efforts to provide excellent water supply and well-maintained fire hydrant system, the efficient call processing and response matrix delivery by 911 dispatchers, and proper training and fire tactical response efforts of firefighters. These efforts, embraced by city leadership, resulted in this important ISO rating upgrade," says Fire Chief Mark English.

Ratings are used by insurance companies to come up with fair premiums for commercial and residential insurance.

The department says the improved rating could positively impact insurance premiums in the community depending on how individual insurance companies bracket the rating in their premium calculations.
