Waverly Shell Rock boys head to state in Class 3A

The Waverly-Shell Rock boys are headed to the Class 3A State Tournament.

The Go-Hawks turned back a challenge from arch rival Charles City Monday night at Denver to win the sub-state final, 55-43.

They are the top two teams in the Northeast Iowa Conference, and split their regular season games.

Charles City won early in the season, 65-61, while the Go-Hawks won the rematch, 62-57.

Junior, Luke Velky led the Go-Hawks with 19. Jack Seward had 12 and Jacob Rahe had 10, all in the first half. Jack Molstead led Charles City with 14, while Mike Cranshaw had 12.

The victory sends Waverly Shell Rock to the 3A State Tournament next week at Wells Fargo Arena.

Waverly Shell Rock heads to state with an 18-6 record, having won the Northeast Iowa Conference with an 11-1 record. Charles City ends its season at 18-5.
