Bigger than basketball: Bohannon misses free throw, ties Street for all-time record

Posted: Updated:

With just an eight point lead and less than three minutes left against Northwestern Sunday night, Jordan Bohannon stepped to the free throw line, where he hasn't missed since December.

He needed just one to break Chris Street's all-time Hawkeye record of 34 made free throws.

Instead, Bohannon missed on purpose, ensuring he would tie, not break, Street's record.

Chris Street set the record in his junior season in 1993.  He was tragically killed in a car accident three days later.

"Yeah, obviously that's not my record to have, and that record deserves to stay in his name.  I've been really close with his family these last couple of years and getting to know them a lot. And just listening to his story and it's really gotten me emotional these past couple of games, because I know what I've wanted to do. Obviously it was a different time that I wanted to do it, but that's something I wanted to do, and like I said, it's been an honor getting to know his family," Bohannon said.

Street's family was at the game, and embraced Bohannon after the game.

They told the Des Moines Register they were touched by the gesture.

Iowa would go on to win the game 77-70.
