Rockwell Collins will take executive offices to Florida, expects minimal relocation for employees

Posted: Updated:

One of the state's largest employers has announced it's moving it's executive office to Florida.

Rockwell Collins is currently headquartered in Cedar Rapids, but in September we learned the company is being bought by United Technologies and the two will form Collins Aerospace Systems.

Rockwell announced yesterday as part of the merger the executive offices will be moved to Palm Beach County, Florida.

"I think it's a minimal impact, it's a very minimal number of people. We're really focused on the positive news, which is that the huge part of the employment base stays here," says Doug Neumann, Executive Director of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance.

Around 8,000 people work at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids making it the city's largest employer.

As Collins Aerospace, the avionics and mission systems unit will remain in Cedar Rapids.

"It was great to have confirmed that the base of the employment is going to remain here. That was aligned with our expectations and certainly what we were hearing from Rockwell officials," Neumann says.

Rockwell Collins says they expect employee relocation to be minimal.

Overall the economic alliance is hopeful the changes will be for the best.

"We're in a really good position with those two business units to potentially see growth over time. And maybe we look back some years from now and see an even larger employer, a more significant, a more influential employer than it is today," Neumann told us.

Until the merger is done United Technologies and Rockwell Collins will still operate as two separate businesses.

Other locations for Collins Aerospace will include Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Charlotte, North Carolina and Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
