The University of Northern Iowa has been named one of the safest college campuses in the nation, according to a new ranking by the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

The 2018 "Safest College Campuses in America" list ranked UNI at No. 30 out of 243 universities and colleges. The list is compiled using the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting and the Campus Security Survey created by the U.S. Department of Education. The highest ranked university campuses boast low total campus and local area crime, according to the council.

"In today's context, families are naturally worried about safety in schools and on campuses," said Paula Knudson, UNI vice president for Student Affairs. "We have many safety measures in place at UNI and are vigilant about providing bystander training and interventions in a timely fashion. UNI prioritizes all aspects of student well-being and success. You can't be your best if you are worried or fearful, and we want our students to be able to be their best."

A number of safety resources are available to UNI students, faculty and staff, such as safety escorts, training, counseling, an on-campus police force and multiple alert systems. To further enhance campus safety, pathways and sidewalks are well lit. Residence halls can only be entered by using a security card or key, and a full-time professional staff person lives in and supervises each residence hall.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security is a trade association comprised of home security professionals across the United States. The council advocates for safe communities and home safety with a strong focus on community involvement.
