JOHNSON COUNTY (KWWL) -

There are some big changes coming to the I-380 / I-80 interchange.

The Iowa DOT says a $300 Million project to improve the interchange kicked off this year, it's expected to be complete by 2024.

Once the project is complete we are told there will be four loops in the interchange that have directional ramps.

Currently drivers merging from I-380 to I-80 are dodging cars merging onto I-380 via the same lane.

In certain areas I-80 will be widened to 8 lanes including from Ireland Avenue to near the Coral Ridge interchange.

The widening will allow for 12 foot wide lanes in both directions and 12 foot wide shoulders.

There will also be a closed median with a barrier on I-80.

I-380 will also be widened, this time to six lanes from north of Melrose Avenue to just north of the Forevergreen Road overpass.

The widening of I-380 will also include 12 foot wide lanes with 12 foot wide shoulders.

There will be a closed median there that will transition to an open grass median north of U.S. 6.

The Iowa DOT says a replacement bridge will be built on Park Road over I-80 and Kansas Avenue SW will be relocated to the south in order to provide an access to homes there.
