Wish comes true for local boy fighting cancer

Posted: Updated:

The words, "You're going to Disney World!" are what dreams are made of for any little kid.  And Jay Payton gets to live that dream, all thanks to Make-A-Wish, UAW Local 838 and Karsyn Krusaders.

In 2017, the Sportsman Committee of UAW Local 838 chose Karsyn Krusaders to be the recipient of their fundraising for the year. At the Sportsman Banquet, organizers of Karsyn Krusaders met Jay Payton.  Payton is going through chemotherapy, as his his grandmother, Mary, who is a UAW member.

Karsyn Krusaders immediately swept into action to do whatever they could to make the tough chemo days easier on Payton and his family by approaching Make-A-Wish.

On February 17, family, friends, firefighters, superheroes, Karsyn Krusaders, Make-A-Wish, and UAW Local 838 members all came together to say those amazing words to Jay, "You're going to Disney World!"

“It’s really great when we get to see where the money we raise goes,” said Steve Darrah, UAW Sportsman Representative.

Karsyn’s Krusaders is a non-profit started by Andy and Jessica Miller to raise money and awareness of cancer, working with dirt track auto racing drivers, tracks and fans.  They started the organization after their own daughter, Karsyn, fought and beat leukemia.  Sadly, Jessica Miller was killed in a car accident in July 2017, but the mission and work of the organization continues on to make kids like Jay know how much support and love they have around them.

On average, the Make-A-Wish organization grants a wish every 38 minutes to a child with a life-threatening medical condition. Learn more on the Make-A-Wish Iowa website.

KWWL wishes Jay and his famly a safe and amazing trip to Disney World!
