CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Cedar Rapids will now have its first ever doctoral programs.

Beginning in the fall of 2018, Mount Mercy University will offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Doctor of Marriage Family Therapy (DMFT) program.

The DNP program focuses on health care for individuals and communities -- including rural health care, learning new methods and working on entrepreneurial skills.

The DMFT program will be one of two offered in Iowa, but it will be the only practice-oriented program in the state. Students in the program will be able to work in an on-site facility and other business settings.

"We're proud to build on our quality master's programs and continue to offer education that meets the demand, both from the community and our alumni," said University President Laurie Hamen.

Mount Mercy offers undergraduate and graduate education to over 1,800 students.
