Iowa man makes bulletproof insert for backpacks after school shooting

Parents across the country are taking extra steps to make sure their child is safe at school, including an Iowa man who is making bulletproof backpack inserts.

Blake Waldrop of Centerville has been making bulletproof armor for years, supplying more than 100 law enforcement agencies in all 50 states. In the wake of the Florida school shooting, Waldrop says he has made a backpack insert that can stand up to any rifle.

He says, "There's always been evil in the world, but now it's growing more and more by the day. Sadly, our kids are being targeted and for me as an armor manufacturer, that's unacceptable."

He decided to take action by doing what he does best.

He says, "This insert is razor-thin, two and a half pounds and this is gonna help keep kids safe by protecting them."

Waldrop says this insert is different because it can protect against bullets fired at close range from rifles. This week, he tested it out.

He says, "A majority of recent school shootings, including the one in Florida, have been used with rifles like an AR-15."

He believes his armor will save children's lives.
