Loras student brings radio back to campus

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Xavier Sanchez had his first introduction to radio when he was in just 3rd grade.

With a couple of family members in radio, it's something he's been around quite a bit.

So he was disappointed when he arrived at Loras to find their radio station was no longer active.

He's spent the last year or so working to resurrect the program.

"It hasn't been as easy as I thought. It's taken quite a while, but in the long run, I think it'll be beneficial to all of us," Sanchez said.

He's spent much of his free time recruiting future DJ's and putting together a full slate of program.

"We have quite the variety. We have someone doing sports, someone doing normal talk with your top 40. We're doing house and electric music. One group is doing what they call a study hour," he said.

In all, he's recruited 13 students to help him fill out that programming.

They'll stream their shows online.

But even with all this work he's done, Sanchez doesn't think he'll go into radio after college.

"No, I think I want to do something with sports, and I think what I'm doing here at Loras with my academics  and my outside co-curriculars, it's going to be a nice roundabout way to get the necessary skills to fulfill those," he said.

Sanchez hopes to have the station up and broadcasting in March.
